Chapter Seventeen

Nick spent the remainder of the morning looking at two-bedroom, two-bath apartments on the west side of the city. Damn, but they were too pricey for his pocket. He aimed the Bronco west toward Bellevue and found several which were in his price range. He signed a year’s lease for one located at the top of a steep hill. Might be hell in the winter, but he liked the semi-isolation of those few units up there.

The complex was older, built in the seventies and clad in very weathered cedar. The rooms were larger than the newer high-priced ones that, granted, were closer to work.

The one he chose had a living room with a corner fireplace, a separate dining room that would make a good office, since formal dining wasn’t his style, an eat-in kitchen, two bedrooms, and two baths. The master was huge and opened onto a deck that ran the entire length of the apartment. From the deck, his view was trees, trees, and more trees. If he didn’t know better, he could’ve been in the middle of the woods with no one around for miles.

Plenty of room for his son to spend his weekends, and the swimming pool was on the hill section of the complex as well.

Now all he needed was a shitload of furniture, and he’d be settled by the time Ben came for another weekend.

Back in the Bronco, he pulled out his cell phone to tell his son the good news.

Naturally, his ex answered. “He’s over at a friend’s house for a play date.”

“Why aren’t you with him?”

“It’s none of your business. He’s in good hands. Where are you and why are you calling him in the middle of the day anyway?”

“I just rented an apartment and wanted to tell him he’d have his own place next time when he comes to spend the weekend.”

“Hmph. It’s about time you got your own place. I’ll tell him. Anything else?”

God. He hated the whine in her voice. “Yeah, don’t go around telling people I was abusive when you damned well know I wasn’t.”

“No, you weren’t around long enough for anything like that to happen.”

“Why’d you lie?”

“What’s the matter, big boy? Did she dump you?” He could hear her gloating over the phone.

“If she did, it wouldn’t be any of your business. Besides, she’s my client. That’s all.”

“Oh well. Too bad, so sad. Now, I’m outta here. I’m due for a mani-pedi, and I’m running late.” She hung up.

Blast it. Why had he ever married her?

Oh yeah, because she’d said she was pregnant and conveniently miscarried as soon as his ring was on her finger. Had she really been pregnant? To this day, he didn’t know.

But if he was a betting man, he’d lay money on not.
